I love pesto but it’s so expensive (pine nuts, I’m looking at you!). This homemade nut free pesto will save you money and you won’t have to worry about hidden nuts that could cause allergy issues.

Reasons to Make Pesto Without Nuts

Allergies are the main reason why I make my pesto without nuts. Traditionally pesto is made with pine nuts which are not actually nuts and thus are not a nut allergy issue.

HOWEVER, many store bought pestos opt for cheaper alternatives to pine nuts and use walnuts or some other nut. I’ve had to stop my son from eating pesto all too often.

Nut Free Pesto is also just much more affordable! Pine nuts cost an arm and a leg!

Using an alternative makes it a more frugal option and means you can have pesto much more often! When I ran the math, sunflower seeds are half the price of pine nuts!

How Long Will Pesto Last?

Pesto will last in the refrigerator in a sealed container for about a week (you may want to add a smidgen of lemon juice to help it retain its green color).

Pesto can also be frozen and can last up to 6 months. I like to top my pesto jar with a thin layer of olive oil to help preserve it better.

Tips for Making Pesto

Use fresh, green basil.
Basil that has flowered is more likely to be bitter.
Always taste your pesto as you make it and adjust if needed.

Ways to Use Pesto

There are so many ways to use pesto. Pasta is a classic option, but you can also use pesto with chicken, grilled cheese sandwiches, pizza, add a spoonful to soups, or just eat it with bread.
