Chicken and rice is one of those meals that everyone makes. It’s easy and usually pretty cheap. Savory Chicken and Apples is one of my favorite ways to make our staple chicken and rice meal.

It can be made with or without the apples. I definitely prefer it with the apples but when I don’t have any on hand, I just skip the apples and the meal still tastes great.

There are a few components to this dish that make it so amazing. The apples definitely are a favorite but I think it all really comes down to the herbs and spices.

I never placed a lot of stock in how much herbs and spices could actually do until I had this dish. Sage, thyme, and paprika. Three ingredients I rarely used until this recipe came along and now those three are some of my favorite herbs and spices to reach for!

Like I said, this dish is a family favorite. We all love the flavor and I love how easy it is to make.

There aren’t a ton of steps and it’s pretty much made all in one pan in under 15 minutes.

As a bonus, anything left on the pan tastes pretty amazing and I’ve been known to grab a spoon and start licking the pan clean! It’s that good!

Savory Chicken and Apples

1lb chicken – cubed
2 tsp. paprika
2 tsp. thyme
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. sage
2 Tbs. butter
2 apples – diced (optional)
1/3 cup apple juice
1 tsp. arrowroot (cornstarch can be substituted if you are alright with that)

Rice

Directions:
Mix chicken with paprika, thyme, salt and sage.
In a pan over medium heat, melt butter (I like to brown my butter for extra flavor but you don’t need to).
Add chicken to pan and cook until almost done.
Add the apples to the pan and cook for 1 minute (if you are adding apples).
Mix the apple juice with the cornstarch and then pour mixture into the pan.
Cook for 1 minute more and then serve over rice.
