Homemade Almond Milk

About two years ago, I realized that the majority of non-dairy milks contained the ingredient carrageenan, a known carcinogen now linked to ulcerative colitis, IBS, colon irritation, and even colon cancer! I knew I needed to make some changes in my grocery lists pronto!  I’m usually an habitual ingredients-reader but I hadn’t really bothered checking our almond and coconut milk purchases, as I assumed they’d be (mostly) natural and organic ingredients.  Turns out I shouldn’t have slacked off.  Sigh. Every carton of non-dairy milk in my fridge (even my husband’s soy creamer) contained carrageenan.  Yikes!  Time to try my...

Cheater’s Coconut Milk

Coconut milk is a popular dairy alternative and for good reason too! Coconut milk is a good source of calories and healthy fats. Coconut milk is rich in phosphorous, magnesium, and is one of the few sources of lauric acid which is full of antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. If you buy coconut milk from the store then it will probably cost you a lot. Store bought coconut milk is also likely to have added ingredients that most of us would rather avoid. Homemade Sugar Free Marshmallows

Hot Chocolate really just isn’t complete without marshmallows. However, store bought marshmallows are less than ideal. They do not taste as good as homemade marshmallows. They are also full of crazy ingredients! Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate? Artificial flavorings and even food dye (because apparently a natural white isn’t enough!) Homemade marshmallows are very simple to make. It’s essentially whipped gelatin. I wanted to make our marshmallows a bit healthier so I do not use the usual sugar or corn syrup that many homemade recipes use. Instead I turned to honey and stevia. I could have gone with all honey in this...

12 Healthy Smoothie Add-Ins

I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned that we love smoothies in our family. We all have one a day and smoothies are the sole reason why I buy 20 bunches of bananas every month! Now a standard smoothie is pretty healthy on its own; usually that’s diary and fruit. Still perfectly healthy and good for you. Why stop there? Why not make it extra healthy?
